Successful Demonstration of SIMPLI-CITY’s Achievements

At the final SIMPLI-CITY review meeting in Dublin, the project team presented the outcomes of three intense years of research work. A particular focus was on the exploitation opportunities of the results from research and technological development conducted within SIMPLI-CITY.

The project got excellent feedback regarding its technical outcomes. The expert reviewers recommended to widen the scope of the SIMPLI-CITY framework to further areas (e.g., Smart Cities, Smart Homes), since framework support is currently a major topic in the H2020 Framework Programme.

The second SIMPLI-CITY workshop "Smart Mobility Services for the Smart City: Architectures and Solutions towards a Service Market Place" took place in the framework of the International Motor Show IAA/New Mobility World (http://newmobilityworld.com/) in Frankfurt on the Main (DE) on the 23rd of September 2015. (download the agenda).

SIMPLI-CITY hosted this workshop jointly with 3 further European projects STREETLIFE (www.streetlife-project.eu), PETRA (www.petraproject.eu), and MYWAY (myway-project.eu). The joint workshop was elaborated with the goal to strengthen the collaboration between the 4 projects and moreover to intensify the knowledge transfer. The IAA/New Mobility World was a perfect place in order to reach the target group of private business actors.

Experts from science, business and authorities presented and discussed technical solutions with a special focus on smart mobility services for Smart Cities. The interactive workshop included a mixture of presentations and discussions and featured a panel session.

Welcome to the fifth and final SIMPLI-CITY newsletter.

During the last three years, the SIMPLI-CITY project has accomplished an impressive number of scientific and technical results. While being very happy about this, we are at the same time a little bit sad that the project is going to come to an end this month.

Within this newsletter, you will find information about selected project results. Especially, we are giving an overview of SIMPLI-CITY’s major outcomes and achievements as well as exploitable project innovations.

Successful Testing and Integrating Hackathon in Dublin

As the SIMPLI-CITY project is coming to an end, it is time to perfect the prototypes for the final deliverables. In order to do so, at the beginning of September, technical people from each partner gathered together at the IBM Research Center in Dublin, Ireland. Under the lead of Philipp Hoenisch (TUV) and Sergi Martinez Lopez (WORLD), the main focus was on further improving the App for the use cases in WP7, i.e., Routing to a Big Event, and Personalized Traffic Restrictions. After performing a detailed evaluation of the App running on the SIMPLI-CITY Personal Mobility Assistant (PMA), the work has been divided into 4 parts and the developers have been split up into small teams, each working on individual issues:

The two speech recognition experts Pontus Lindström (TALK) and Fredrik Kronlid (TALK) optimized the voice input by integrating additional functionalities into the Talkamatic Dialogue Management (TDM) server.

Freddy Lecue (IBM), Richard Meister (TUDA) and Lucas Backert (TUDA) worked on the integration of additional data sources. In addition, the three optimized the location finder on the PMA and integrated additional helper methods which will be needed for further developments.
Arturo Brotons (TIE), Xavier Febrer Jorda (WORLD) and Sergi Martinez Lopez (WORLD) worked on further improvements of the main App.
The two PhD students Christoph Hochreiner (TUV) and Philipp Hoenisch (TUV) concentrated on fixing minor bugs on the server side of the SIMPLI-CITY Service Runtime Environment, and integrated additional functionalities into the App e.g., the ability to share arbitrary information to a social network.

After 4 days of productive work the partners returned back home and will continue finishing the last open issues.

SIMPLI-CITY at Collaboration Workshop in Berlin

On May 20th, SIMPLI-CITY met with the related projects MyWay, MOVEUS, STREETLIVE, MOVESMART, PETRA, and TEAM in Berlin to discuss potential possibilities for project collaboration. During the very fruitful discussions, the topics "user engagement", "crowd sourcing of mobility information", "European Wide Service Platform" and "private and public modes integration" were identified as common topics to collaborate on. A follow-up meeting is planned in the very near future.

4 SIMPLI-CITY-related papers accepted for publication

The paper “Optimization of Complex Elastic Processes”, which presents a novel approach to schedule business processes and optimise the used Cloud-based computational resources in a cost–efficient way, has been accepted for publication by the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC) Journal.

Furthermore, research conducted within SIMPLI-CITY at IBM and at Technical University of Vienna has led to the acceptance of further 3 scientific papers to be presented at renowned conferences:

- In January 2015 the paper “Consistent Knowledge Discovery from Evolving Ontologies” has been presented at the Twenty-Ninth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2015) in Austin, Texas, USA.

- “Scalable Maintenance of Knowledge Discovery in an Ontology Stream” is accepted for presentation at the Twenty-Fourth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2015), which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 25-31 July 2015.

- “SPEEDL - A Declarative Event-Based Language for Cloud Scaling Definition” will be presented in the flagship workshop for software engineering for/in the cloud The Future of Software Engineering For and In Cloud (FoSEC), Visionary Track of IEEE Services 2015, New York, US.

SIMPLI-CITY partners work on business-plan

From 11^th to 13^th of March 2015 SIMPLI-CITY partners met at Vienna University of Technology. During this workshop meeting, collaborative work, creative contributions from all partners, and fruitful discussions helped to further shape and develop SIMPLI-CITY’s business model.

Two SIMPLI-CITY related papers will be presented

Research conducted within SIMPLI-CITY at the Technical University of Darmstadt has led to the acceptance of two papers to be presented at forthcoming conferences in February and March 2015 respectively:

A paper (in German language) titled “Navigate.KOM: Datenbankbasierter Informationsansatz für Fahrassistenzsysteme” will be presented to interested stakeholders from the Automotive Industry and Scientific Community at the Automotive meets Electronics AmE 2015 conference, which will take place in the German City of Dortmund from 24^th to 25^th February, 2015.

A paper titled “A Concept for a C2X-based Crossroad Assistant” will be presented at the 2^nd IEEE PerCom Workshop on Smart Environments: Closing the Loop, which will take place in St. Louis, Missouri, USA on March 23, 2015. Within this paper the concept for an innovative crossroads assistant that is based on newly standardized C2X message types, and a novel graphical user interface for interpreting this new information sources in an intuitive, informative but not distractive way to the driver are introduced.

Best In-Use Paper at ISWC 2014

A paper about the scalable extension of STAR-CITY (the predictive reasoning component of SIMPLI-CITY) to Bologna, Miami and Rio has been awarded the best In-Use Paper at the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2014), which took place in Riva del Garda, Italy, 19-23 October 2014.

Abstract of the award-winning paper:

Barbosa, “Semantic Traffic Diagnosis with STAR-CITY: Architecture and Lessons Learned from Deployment in Dublin, Bologna, Miami and Rio”, in the 13th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2014), Trento, Italy, 2014, p. 292-307.

STAR-CITY is a system supporting Semantic road Traffic Ana-lytics and Reasoning for CITY. The system has been designed (i) to provide insight on historical and real-time traffic conditions, and (ii) to support efficient urban planning by integrating (human and machine-based) sensor data using variety of formats, velocities and volumes. Initially deployed and experimented in Dublin City (Ireland), the system and its architecture have been strongly limited by its flexibility and scalability to other cities. This paper describes its limitations and presents the “any-city” architecture of STAR-CITY together with its semantic configuration for flexible and scalable deployment in any city. This paper also strongly focuses on lessons learnt from its deployment and experimentation in Dublin (Ireland), Bologna (Italy), Miami (USA) and Rio (Brazil).
